Join Steven Chapman, KB1RLF, as he presents “Situational Awareness for Field Operators” at the 2026 Northeast HamXposition. (Date, time, room T.B.A.)
There are many things to think about when operating in the field, but none are as important as your personal safety. The idyllic nature of parks and remote places often give us a false sense of security. Situational awareness—how you perceive your surroundings, recognize potential dangers, and predict their impact—ensures that your field operations run smoothly and you remain prepared for the unexpected. Steven Chapman, KB1RLF, is the Chief Park Ranger for the Town of Trumbull, Connecticut. He shares his experiences as a former police officer and natural resources officer with over 20 years of experience in law enforcement to provide his perspective on how to operate within park rules and stay safe doing it. This is more than a presentation; it’s also a chance to share your experiences, ideas, and concerns, and active participation is encouraged!
